Confidence Evaluation Tool Is Up

We sent out a tool earlier this week to our Think subscribers that measures the current confidence level within an organization as it relates to their ability to communicate and market themselves. So far so good! It's been interesting to see the results so far.

We've been encouraged that many have told us that the evaluation has been helpful in bringing things to the surface that need to be fixed and also accurately framed up their organization's current position.

We're opening up this tool and placing it on our site for everyone to access. You can download it here.

Some people have begun sharing it with their employees and coworkers and even employers to gain an even more accurate picture of where their company is at. Please feel free to share it with others, that's what it's for!

When you submit your results back to us, we'll send you back a free report that sheds even more light about your score and what you can do to improve it. we hope you'll find it as helpful as those who've already taken it and responded.

Developing A Confidence Evaluation Tool

Personality ConfidencePersonality™ is all about giving companies the confidence to communicate clearly. For the last couple of months, we've been developing a tool that measures the current confidence level within an organization as it relates to their ability to communicate and move people to action. We've narrowed it down to eight questions that we believe speak to the core issues of confident communication.

In the next week, we'll roll out the evaluation tool to our Think subscribers, along with an accompanying guide that helps companies interpret their score and figure out how to increase their confidence factor.

It's just one of the many things we're working on here at Personality™.

Personality™ Springtacular 2008

This past week we did our annual Personality™ Springtacular. Similar to last year, it's our chance to set aside the current projects we're working on and think about the business as a whole. Where are we at, where are we going.

We organized our conversation around two themes this year: Current State and Future State. We then did an exercise to "mind the gap" that connects where we're at now (current state) to where we are going (future state). The "mind the gap" conversation resulted in a task list of about 10 things. All of those were grouped into three primary categories that we phrased as objectives:

  1. Survive and thrive.
  2. Build the team and build the brand.
  3. Think ahead.

Next up is drilling down each of the objectives and tasks and turning them into projects and milestones that can be managed.

Foosball With A View

Last week a few of the Personality™ guys got a hankering to rearrange the office a little bit and decided to move the prized foosball table to a more prime spot. Now, when resident or visiting foosball players dawn their gameface, they can overlook the Los Angeles skyline from our eighth-floor offices. If you're ever in the LA area, stop by anytime. Feel free to let us know your foosball savviness ahead of time so we can pair you with the right match. Not many people are able to beat Ken!

Profile Workshop Huge Success

Over the weekend, we led one of our clients through a three-hour Personality Profile™ Workshop with 80 of their staff and representatives. It was the first time the company had brought everyone together in the same room for a long time (half of their team are field-based). To say that the workshop was a success would be a gross understatement. Several people approached us afterward and shared--with deep emotion--their renewed sense of purpose and commitment to the company they've worked at for so many years. It was a humbling experience for me, Brett and Shawn to be a part of!

The Personality Profile™ Workshop is the perfect follow up to the Personality Profile™. It takes the 21 powerful Personality frames and brings them to life for participants. Each person goes away with a clear and simple way to approach their job both individually and as a team, all the while bringing a renewed sense of clarity and direction for why the company exists in the first place.

Christmas Party 2007

We started the evening with dinner at Nick & Stef's and then walked a few blocks to the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the Handel's Messiah Sing-Along. With the exception of our absent waiter, it was a great evening in downtown Los Angeles!

We also invited Brian Zopf to join us so we could give him a final goodbye. Brian started working at Personality™ in May of 2005 and recently took a position with Russ Reid. Brian was a big part of our 2007 so we just had to have him back one last time. Thanks Brian!

Embracing Personality™

We always push for our clients to embrace what's most true about who they are and what they do. We sound like a broken record at times, encouraging them to simplify and lock onto the core thing that makes them valuable.

Well, we've taken some of our own advice and come to some amazing clarity. What I'm about to say might be a bit of a shock ...

We are not a cause marketing agency after all. Maybe I should repeat that--we are not a cause marketing agency. I know, kind of surprising to us too.

For the last couple of years we've talked about the importance of giving and the opportunity that cause marketing presents. And you've listened--boy have you listened. It's been thrilling to watch our doors, phones and inboxes graced by directors and VPs of some of the biggest and best brands: Hyundai, Wellpoint, The Hershey Company, Young & Rubicam and others.

Friends and Neighbors

Last night we had the first of many for what we're calling FAN Intro Meetings. FAN is short for "friends and neighbors." The recipe is simple: We invite a handful of people (3-5), kick it off with a light dinner catered by a local organic restaurant, and then do a 60-minute presentation from the Personality team. We add an additional 30 minutes at the end for feedback.

It's a great way to get close and collaborate with potential clients, partners, friends and networkers in an environment that shows off our own personality. All of the team are present for the meeting so it's all out in the open. We meet in our offices. What you see is what you get.

We have another one scheduled for next week too. If you're a friend or neighbor who hasn't been invited yet (we're working our way down the list), feel free to drop us a line for an upcoming date. Hope to see you there!

What Business Can Learn from a Tree

It's a wonder what you can learn about life and business when you take the time to sit in a park. I recently did just that and had an epiphany that took me back to 8th grade science. We all remember this simple little lesson: "Human beings breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen."

OK, so you're probably wondering what's the epiphany?

It's all about the give and take relationship! The tree and our lungs both give out and it comes back as something that nurtures and sustains our very existence and perpetuates our relationship.

Personality™ Principles

During our Springtacular in March, I introduced the team to our Personality™ Principles. Borrowing a page from Ritz Carlton's legendary service values, we adapted some of them for ourselves and added many of our own. The result are 13 guiding principles that we will allow to organically take root in our heads and hearts. More than just big ideals, these principles will help guide us individually and collectively as we continue to help discover, develop and tell stories that propel causes and profit businesses.

Springtacular 2007

At the end of March the Personality™ team went off-site for a one day "Springtacular." We do something similar in the fall when we go away for a more extended period of time. These twice-a-year moments are very helpful for re-setting perspectives and getting priorities synced up. Leaving Las Vegas

Earlier this week, Personality™ account director Brett Hutchinson completed his move from the East. When Brett joined the team at the beginning of 2006, he was originally located in Ohio. It took a little while selling their home and, before arriving here this week, the Hutchinsons were living in Las Vegas--a planned stopover before their arrival this week into Los Angeles.

Brett wins the award for living the closest to the office--he's about a mile away. We're all thrilled to have Brett here for good! Now if we could just get the office re-model finished ...

Our Wives Still Like Us

Today we said goodbye to Amanda Paganini, senior designer here at Personality™. Amanda joined the team July 5 of last year. The news of her departure kind of stunned us all, as did the opportunity when it fell on her lap. The opportunity for Amanda to move on this quickly in her short career is a testimony to her strength as a designer. We will miss Amanda's creativity around here, especially her off-the-wall ideas and ever-changing style (she's on hair color number two in just seven months).

With Amanda and Kari no longer here, we're down to all guys on the team. Uh oh. Now what?

Lisa Says You Need Us

Last Friday I wrote about the book I finished reading by Lisa Johnson. One of the things I failed to mention was Lisa's concluding thoughts in her last few pages. It was the one time that made me literally shout a "wahoo" as I nearly fell off the treadmill at the gym. She identifies five key players she believes every organization in every industry--regardless of size or budget--should have. "Even if you're a sole entrepreneur, these are the people you will need to find as strategic partners."

The first "partner" she identifies is what she calls content strategists. Aside from the lame title, the description she gives of this role is nearly spot on for what Personality™ does when it comes to profiting businesses and propelling causes.

Lots of Learning, Lots to Learn

Last summer we sent Shawn and Ken to the HOW conference. Last month we sent Brett to the ReCourses new business summit. This week Brian and Josh are going through some training with Franklin Covey.

I love the enthusiasm in people when they take a break from the ordinary and pursue the extra-ordinary. In addition to the great knowledge each person reports back and applies to their job, there is this intangible rejuvenation that comes upon people that is so contagious!

Some people think that only the bosses/managers should get to pursue outside educational opportunities. At the very least it keeps them one step ahead. I'm of the persuasion that when everyone is learning, everyone is benefiting.

Office Re-Model

If you've been to the Personality™ offices lately, you've noticed a lot of dust, debris and dirty digs. Late last year we began re-modleing our offices as we expand a little bit. It's a challenge to work in the same environment where walls are going down and going up! We're looking forward to a speedy completion, hopefully within the next 30-60 days. Our plan is to have an open house once it's all finished. The new conference room has a view of downtown LA, the Hollywood sign and beautiful Echo Park lake. You can't beat that!

Tasting Our Medicine

Here at Personality™, we're always tweaking our service offerings so that we can stay a leader in the cause marketing world. Many months ago, Brett approached me with the idea that we should test some of our own "genius" out on ourselves. If we think what we're doing for our clients works so great, should it not also work for us?

So on Friday we put ourselves through one of those processes and it was powerful! I think more organizations should be doing this. How do your products, services, promises work for you?

We spent four hours dissecting who we are, what we do, and who we do it for. It was some of the most productive four hours we've spent together in a long time. The results will be seen in subtle and significant ways in the weeks and months ahead.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2007

Today in the United States, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Established in 1983, it is the newest addition to our annual holiday lineup, although it wasn't until 2000 that every state recognized it (thanks Utah!). Besides George Washington, Dr. King is the only other American honored with a national holiday.

Several months ago we were brainstorming as a team what to do for gifts this past Christmas for Personality™ clients and friends. Instead of sending something along with every other fruit basket and chocolate, we re-directed our efforts to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Last week we shipped hundreds of gift kits with an invitation to dream. Inspired by Dr. King, each kit is your chance to create some space and ask "What if?"

This holiday means a whole lot to us because it's about a cause. It's the day we recognize a man who wasn't just standing up for racial equality, he was fighting for justice.

"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant ... I believe the wounded justice, lying prostrate on the blood-flowing streets of our nations, can be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men. I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered me have torn down, men other-centered can build up." -From his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech on December 10, 1964

Goodbye Kari Gibbs

Four months ago we welcomed Kari Gibbs to the team as our much anticipated project director. We had been looking forward to her arrival for quite sometime, and realized how much more we really did need her after she arrived. Kari has been amazing!

Not long after Kari began working at Personality™ she learned of the news that her sister had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Over the last several months, and many long weekend trips to the Sacramento area, Kari has made the decision to move up north to be with her sister full time. Life is short. Work is not. We're behind Kari in her decision to spend these unknown number of remaining days with her sister. Kari, you will be missed! Thanks for all you've done in the short amount of time you were here.

Kari's last day will be this Friday, January 12.

Where's My Gift?

Ever since our early days in Chicago, Personality™ has been known for giving some pretty ridiculous gifts during Christmas to our clients. One year it was a gift box that had a lever you pulled when you opened it. The lever lit up the box with Christmas lights surrounded by chocolate and coffee. Another year it was a box that asked you to place a magnet over a button. Once the connection was made, a fan started inside and created a snow storm in the box!

This year, we decided against a Christmas gift and instead are doing something a little different. Surprise, surprise. What, you ask?

You'll just have to see.

Happy New Year 2007

Happy New Year from all of us at Personality™! We just returned from a restful week off, and we're looking forward to a meaning-filled 2007.

We spent our Reflection time this morning sharing holiday stories and catching up after being away for 10 days. The highlight for me was how everyone was able to really unplug and unwind. Of course that's not hard when you're like our art director who spent the last week in Hawaii for Christmas with family.

Brett and Brian, our account director and account executive, respectively, didn't waste anytime bringing in the new year. They're both out east working on our first Brand Analysis of the year with a client in DC.

Breakfast with Melissa Havard

Had breakfast yesterday with Brian Zopf, Personality account exec, and Melissa Havard. Melissa is one of those under-the-radar people who knows everyone. She used to work at the CDC in Atlanta before moving with her husband of 20+ years (that's over 100 in Hollywood years!) to Southern California. Melissa is passionate about causes, especially those involving youth. With strong ties here in LaLa land (especially within celebrity circles), Melissa is a rolling thunder with a big heart and a strong sense of purpose.

It was refreshing to pick her brain for an hour. Thanks Melissa!

Personality™ Christmas 2006

Last night was our company Christmas celebration. The entire team was there and, with the exception of two, everyone's spouse/significant other was present as well. We started off the evening with dinner at the swanky Crustacean restaurant in Beverly Hills, and then took a jaunt over to UCLA's Royce Hall for the season premier of Slava's Snow Show. The show was a little freaky, but certainly a moment to remember as a team.

I'm kicking myself because we all had cameras but we forgot to snap a picture of the team. One of these days we'll work it into someone's job description I suppose.

I love hanging out with these guys and gals! This year's highlight was handing out bobble head trophies to everyone on the team. Each trophy was a a celebration of a personal blooper for 2006. Fun stuff.

Get Well Brian

If you've missed our Account Executive Brian Zopf the past few weeks, so have we. He was attending a Franklin Covey leadership workshop in Santa Ana, Calif. when a dull stomach ache devolped into intense pain. Conference attendees found Brian doubled over in his hotel room and rushed him to the hopsital.

Brian's appendix ruptured and he had to have immediate surgery. He spent six days in the hospital and has been recuperating at a friend's house since. His staples were removed last week and we expect him back in the office on Monday, a full month since his appendix was removed.

We've missed you, Brian--it'll be good to have you back in the office more or less intact.

What's Your Cause?We've officially joined the world of MySpace. You can check out the Personality™ profile and add us as your friend.

We know what you're thinking--but MySpace isn't just for the kids. We've said it before, but 87% of MySpace users are over 18. We're hoping to use MySpace as a place to champion causes. And we're starting by asking, "What's your cause?"

Causes are important and always most important to the people who have a passion for them. We want to hear from those people. We want to hear what causes they care about and why. We hope a few people can learn about causes they didn't even know existed and find ways to get involved and make a difference.

A lot of people want to slam MySpace for the potential dangers, but we see a lot of good potential, a lot of world-changing potential.

Personality Getaway 2006

The Personality™ Team: (left to right, back to front) Josh, Ken, Shawn, Brad, Brett, Brian, Kevin, Amanda, Mark.On August 18 and 19 the Personality™ team went to the mountaintop for a little rest and refocus. We spent two days reflecting on our history, talking about strengths and dreaming about the future. We also played horseshoes and pool, ate good food and admired the view of Big Bear Lake.

Here are a few of the things we learned:

When we finally descended from the mountain we had piles of notes, chockfull of ideas and wisdom. As we're learning, being a successful company isn't simply meeting deadlines and working on projects. It's also thinking ahead and dreaming big. And it's figuring out how to make those dreams a reality. It's what we hope to do for causes, and it's something we're putting into practice ourselves.

Personality Refocuses on Cause Marketing

It takes a certain amount of passion to start a company that can trace its roots back to a spare bedroom. But those are the roots of Personality™. With that passion at heart, it should come as no surprise that we're solidifying ourselves as a cause marketing agency, combining our practical approach to branding, marketing and design with our passion to support social causes.

This is something we've wanted to announce since early this year. We believe we can change the world and now it's part of our business plan. It's about helping non-profits and businesses work together so everybody wins. It's pairing a heart full of idealism with a head full of practicality. It's about doing well while doing good.

It's something we've done since the beginning, back in that spare bedroom in 1998, though the cause marketing revelation has only come lately. Last year we met with an outside consultant, Paula Serios, former ad exec with Ogilvy, and head of marketing and communications at Mission Hospital in Irvine, Calif. Over the course of six months Serios helped us fine-tune our mission and focus. We realized this is what we've been doing all along, we just never had the words for it. Now we're processing what this means and adjusting our focus and communication to help causes.

We bring together the incurable idealism with the practical reality--it's a marriage of the head and heart. Welcome to Personality™--the cause marketing agency.

Tell Your Own Story

We have a confession to make. We fell into the trap we see so many of our clients fall into. We let urgent deadlines and giant projects push back our own communication. We became so busy telling the stories of our clients that we forgot to tell our own story.

And we've got a story to tell, though you wouldn't know it from the thick layer of dust on this blog and the placeholder image on the front of our web site.

We've been waiting for so long because we have more than business as usual to report. We've got big news. We wanted to make a big splash with a new web site and a new e-mail newsletter and press releases and the whole shebang. But all of that takes time and when you get busy it's easy to focus on what pays the bills. We got so wrapped up in doing it just right that we didn't have time to do it at all.

But if you want to stick around, you have to tell our own story too.

So we're going to dust off this site and start telling our story again. It's not as splashy as we'd like, but it's something.

Where's the Talent?

In the September 26 issue of Ad Week Gregory Solman wrote an article about the increasing trend–at least for now–of big agency business moving from the west to the east. Clients like Mitsubishi, Jaguar, Subway and Outback Steakhouse are all taking their ad business from California to places like New York, Chicago, and Boston. Not citing any real reasons, other than perhaps a comment from an agency president that accounts want to be closer to the "motherships," LA-based agencies are certainly feeling it.

One would then assume that the available talent pool in Los Angeles should be growing? Where are these account managers, creative directors, account planners and producers going? Here in Los Angles, the small pool of talent known as Personality™ is thriving. Sure, we could always use more business, but we'd love to add to our team people who are passionate about creative excellence, especially as it relates to rallying around a cause. We're not a big agency with huge clients. If that were the case we'd probably be a statistic in the above article. We are a small firm that works hard and enjoys seeing ideas work. Interested?

Responding to Clients & Katrina

We want to go the extra mile with our clients. For one of our most recent jobs I guess you could say we went not only the extra mile, but 2,500 more.

In the wake of the horrific devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, government officials, non-profit organizations, hundreds of churches and even individuals scrambled to help. A client of ours happened to be among them. This organization was granted access to previously restricted and tightly controlled evacuee camps throughout the South, and they jumped at the chance. So did we.

You can stay up to date with Personality™ by signing up for our e-mail newsletter or you can subscribe to our RSS feeds and get the updates when you want them.

What is RSS? It stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it's a way you can have a web site's content delivered to you. You'll be alerted when a web site updates without having to visit the site or give out your e-mail address. All you need is an RSS reader, like the free web-based Bloglines service. It puts you in control, so no one can sell your e-mail address or send you junk you didn't ask to receive.

Bottom line: It's a great way to increase your productivity and stay on top of what's happening, not just with Personality™, but with any of the web sites you visit.

Check our sidebar for four different types of feeds. What's the difference? Different technologies implemented at different times. Atom and RSS 2.0 are the newest, and RSS 2.0 is our most popular feed.
